Henrietta Lacks was a Black woman whose cervical cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line. This cell line is one of the most important cell lines in medical research.

In 1951 the cells were biopsied from her tumor while she was undergoing treatment for cancer at Johns Hopkins University, the only place in her area that would treat Black patients. HeLa cells have since been used across the globe for research into cancer, AIDS, and genetics. There are over 11,000 patents involving HeLa cells.

Henrietta Lacks' story came to light with the publishing of the bestseller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It's a great read and I highly recommend it.

Many have finally paid tribute to her invaluable contriubition to medical research by naming lectures, conferences, and even a small planet after her. Johns Hopkins has announced plans to name a research building after her.

Lacks, a mother of 5, died in 1951 at age 31.
