Welcome back to another birth story episode everyone!
Before we start in on this story about giving birth during COVID-19, I want to acknowledge the huge protests going on in America and abroad at the time of this recording. These protests, begun after George Floyd was murdered by a police officer, are happening in response to the racism that is embedded into our societies and institutions. I have always worked to lift up and serve all mamas, but promise to continue my commitment to helping Black mamas in particular navigate America's racist medical system.
Alright, on to this fascinating and wonderful birth story with Rachel Givens. Rachel, her husband and their new baby live in Brooklyn Heights, and she is the Head of Accounts and Production at the feedfeed, a crowdsourced food publication.
At the time Rachel gave birth, things were changing minute to minute at hospitals due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this episode, she talks about how she and her husband prepared for the possibility that Rachel would have to give birth alone at the hospital. We also discuss what the overall experience was like, giving birth to a big baby after a long labor, why her supportive community was so essential, and how she navigated postpartum mastitis.
