🚁 How a pregnant patient ended up getting a hel 🚁 How a pregnant patient ended up getting a helicopter ride….

🤰I got a call from an Emergency Department about transferring a patient. She was in her third trimester, preterm, and having abdominal pain thought to be contractions. However there was no ability to monitor her because the hospital where she was doesn’t have a labor and delivery unit.

She had gotten to that hospital because she was at home and had pain. Her sister panicked a bit and called 911. The ambulance came, but the nearest hospital with a L&D unit was on diversion, meaning they were closed for any transfer patients. 😲

So they took her to the next closest hospital, the one with no labor and delivery. More on that in a sec…

She definitely needed to be evaluated in an L&D unit, but the ED doc said that it would take at least 4 hours for an ambulance to arrive. That would be too long if she was actually in preterm labor. So the only option was ➡️ a medical helicopter.

🚁The helicopter came but on the way to my hospital there was some potential for bad weather. So the helicopter had to make a detour and land for a bit to decide if they could make it to my hospital or if they needed an ambulance to take her the rest of the way.

🚁Ultimately they decided they could fly safely and they made it to me about an hour after they had left the other hospital.

➡️The patient ultimately was not in labor and she was discharged home after what she called a “scary” helicopter ride and experience.

A couple lessons from this story-
➡️If you have a problem in pregnancy, start with calling your doctor’s office. There is typically someone on call 24/7 who you can speak with to help you decide if you need to go to the hospital.

➡️Calling 911 should be for true emergencies.

➡️If at all possible, when you have a problem in pregnancy, especially the 3rd trimester, go to a hospital with a labor and delivery unit. Hospitals without a L&D just aren’t equipped to deal with pregnancy issues. It just ends up delaying care.

Tell me below - on a scale of 1-10, how blown away were you by this story??

What does it mean to be Rh negative and what are t What does it mean to be Rh negative and what are the implications for pregnancy? 🤔

The short story is that Rh negative has to do with your blood type. If you’re Rh negative and your baby is Rh positive, it can potentially cause problems for your baby.

Alloimmunization is what occurs when an Rh negative mom's immune system is exposed to the baby’s Rh positive cells. When this happens the mom's immune system may attack the baby's red blood cells and this can be problematic.

✅ There are effective treatments for this and not all exposure will necessarily result in alloimmunization, however it’s very important to take this seriously.

✨If you take one thing away from this episode it’s that prevention is key (that's what something called Rhogam is for). It's the best way to keep your baby safe.

In this Episode of the All About Pregnancy & Birth Podcast, You’ll Learn About:
➡️ What the blood group systems are and what that means
➡️ What the most common blood types are
➡️ What alloimmunization is and when it occurs
➡️ How to prevent it
➡️ What are the fetal/neonatal consequences of alloimmunization
➡️ What types of screenings are done
➡️ What rhogan is, how it works, and the safety of it
