💗Dr. Rebecca Dekker, @ebbirth, is back! You may 💗Dr. Rebecca Dekker, @ebbirth, is back! You may remember Dr. Rebecca from way, way back in episode 18.
Since then, my work and hers have both grown tremendously.
If you enjoy what I’m doing here I think you would also enjoy the resources she provides through her organization, Evidence Based Birth.
💗Today’s conversation is all about the topic she has dedicated so much of her work to: birthing positions.
A majority of US births are supine, or on the back.
This is what we always see in tv and movies but it’s actually not the ideal, or more importantly, ONLY way to give birth.
There isn’t a perfect or best labor position.
Instead, what really matters is that you have the freedom and support to move your body and find what works best for you.

You’ll Learn:
➡️ What the classifications are for birthing positions
➡️What does research show about which positions people opt for if given the choice
➡️Why most people in the US give birth on their backs
➡️What makes lithotomy/stirrup birth dangerous
➡️What evidence says about birth positions with and without an epidural
➡️How birth seats are used

🤰 Sometimes I see women enter their birth space 🤰 Sometimes I see women enter their birth space in the hospital with a demanding, aggressive, confrontational, borderline angry approach in terms of communicating what they want for their birth.
I understand why you might think you need to use that type of approach. There are unfortunately lots of stories where women's birth wishes are dismissed, ignored, or belittled. So I get it that you may think you need to go in guns blazing in order to have your wishes heard.
But that's actually not the best way to approach your birth (at least not to start).
❤️ Doctors and nurses are human beings. And human beings tend to respond to kindness.
❤️ So start from a place of kindness and warmth.
❤️ Talk with your care team and create a genuine human connection.
❤️ Not only will that go a long way towards having your wishes respected, but it also sets up a good atmosphere for your birth.
❤️ You'll have an easier time giving birth with kind, warm energy surrounding you. It's harder for your body to relax into birth if there's aggressive or confrontational energy.
Now by all means, if people aren't listening to you then start demanding, be aggressive, and confrontational.
Do what you need to do to advocate for yourself. You just don't need to start there.
If you're looking for a good place to start, check out my podcast by clicking the link in my bio ✨
